Lead Instructor and Founder Jp has been a teacher and a student in Weapons/Martial Arts for over 30 yrs. His instruction began with Rapier in Toledo Spain. Since that time, Jp has been fortunate to travel the world and study with some of the best instructors this world had to offer. From Rapier and Dagger in Spain, Khopesh & Spear in Africa, Kendo/Kenjutsu/Iaido in Japan and Broadsword in Austria just to name a few. He is also one of the only Fight choreographers to offer classes in Fire Weapon Combat. Jp also had the great privilege to spend 3 years learning from the legendary fight choreographer Bob Anderson.

Jon Sr. has had the pleasure of studying and teaching Pugilism for over 30 years. Jon's job allowed him to travel to the far reaches of the world from Irish Stand Down in Ireland, Bare knuckle boxing in Canada and Russia, Dambe Boxing in Africa, plus Classic British Pugilism.Add to that he has been studying Rapier and Saber for the last 17 years and he is one of DADC's greatest assets.

Instructors - Dylan Hintz
Dylan Hintz is a SAG-AFTRA stunt performer based in New York City. His recent credits include Gotham, The Blacklist, Blindspot, and PURGE: Election Year. Originally from Gaithersburg, Maryland, Dylan co-founded the DC Stunt Coalition in 2011 in order to provide an accessible and reliable training organization for current and aspiring stunt professionals in the Washington Mid-Atlantic region. He has served as a stunt coordinator for HBO, CBS, and National Geographic, as well as dozens of independent features, web videos, commercials, and student films in the DC area. A graduate of Salisbury University in Mass Media Production and Film Studies, Dylan is also an award winning filmmaker and professional media producer, who has been making video content for freelance clients for over 10 years, and has worked as a production technician for Montgomery Community Media and as a broadcast technician for The Kennedy Center. Through the DC Stunt Coalition, Dylan has produced multiple independent stunt and stage combat shows for major fan conventions, and has produced shorts for the DC 48 Hour Film Project for the last 4 years. Sharing his passion for martial arts, stage combat, and film making, Dylan has also taught combat movement and fight performance at various colleges, community centers, and conventions, including Salisbury University, Howard County Public Schools, and Awesome Con. His work has provided him many opportunities to travel the world and train under some of the best professionals the stunt, stage combat, and martial arts industries. Dylan regularly returns to DC in order to share his experiences, in an effort to give back and help grow the film making community that raised and inspired him.

By Starley Murray Live on Friday, February 3, 2013 ‘Live by the Sword,’ that has been my life from an early age. I first picked up a sword in Toledo, Spain in 1986, where Maestro Valentino taught me dueling and how to stop a bleeding wound on my face. I have had many Maestros and Sensei’s from around the world since then, in every edged weapon I could get my hands on. But the one who taught me the most about how a sword master should act was lost to the world on January 1st 2012. Bob Anderson (aka: the man who stabbed Errol Flynn,) the choreographer of the Princess Bride fight scene, and many other Hollywood favorites. I met him after spending many years training all over the world and I had developed a bit of an ego. You know the, ‘I am young and can take on the world,’ thing. When I met him it was like meeting an old friend. He was the most modest man I have ever known. People would approach him all the time and say I love this fight scene or that fight scene, and he would just say, “thank you.” I spent three years training with Bob, and after all the teachers I have had, he was the hardest. The best way to describe him is that he was a knight of old. In his words, he taught me to, ‘Excel in the arms, to show courage, to be gallant and loyal, and to swear off cowardice and baseness.” He showed me that combat on screen is an art form and can tell a beautiful story when done the right way. The biggest thing he taught was that it is okay to demand perfection for something you love and to follow what makes you happy. I was lucky to be able to call him a friend and a mentor. Those three years have influenced my fight choreography more than anything else. Yes, I can be a bit of a perfectionist. Eastern Weapons - Katar
The basic katar has a short, wide, triangular blade. Its peculiarity lies in the handle which is made up of two parallel bars connected by two or more cross-pieces, one of which is at the end of the side bars and is fastened to the blade. The remainder forms the handle which is at right angle to the blade. Some handles have long arms extending across the length of the user's forearm. The handle is generally of all-steel construction and is forged in one piece together with the blade.The force of a katar thrust could be so great that many blades were thickened at the point to prevent them from bending or breaking. This also strengthened their use against mail. Such a weapon was capable of piercing textile, mail, and even plate armor. This quality was preferred for warfare, where an opponent was more likely to be armor-clad, as opposed to single combat. Because the katar's blade is in line with the user's arm, the basic attack is a direct thrust identical to a punch, although it could also be used for slashing. This design allows the fighter to put their whole weight into a thrust. Typical targets include the head and upper body, similar to boxing. The sides of the handle could be used for blocking but it otherwise has little defensive capability. As such, the wielder must be agile enough to dodge the opponent's attacks and strike quickly, made possible because of the weapon's light weight and small size. Aside from the basic straight thrust, other techniques include the reverse flipped pierce, inwards side slashing, outwards side slashing, cobra coiled thrust, and tiger claw pierce performed by jumping towards the opponent.

Eastern Weapons - Katana
A katana is a weapon with a history that dates back almost a thousand years and there is a deep tradition that inevitably has grown around its use. Whether you are a practitioner of the purer, formal kata techniques found in Kenjutsu or the more modern style of Kendo or belong to any of the literary hundreds of modern styles of Japanese swordsmanship that came into popularity in the 20th century there are two things which are the same: (A.) The use of the katana, in its basics, differs very little from what the ancient Samurai would have practiced and (B.) The weapon, without the body is useless. Everybody knows what a samurai sword is, mostly because they are considered very cool and are today seen more as a symbol than a regular historical bladed weapon. Actually, katana is just one type of sword-type blade that was used by Japanese warriors, who later in history became a cast in feudal system of this nation. Before the katana, there was the tachi, a blade worn by samurai before the invention of katana. Tachi was longer and proportionally lighter than a katana, and it blade had a bigger curvature. In essence, it was a cavalry weapon, used by mounted troops. A few centuries later, samurai dismounted and fought mostly on foot. Soon after that, the katana was born. Katana is a very recognizable weapon. It has a curved blade (but not as curved as the tachi) and a long grip because it was meant to be wielded by both hands (samurai weren't big on carrying shields). Frankly, no other bladed weapon is as distinctive as the katana, and its spectacular design, refined by master blacksmiths and forgers, was compared to the simplicity of a single blade of grass that could cut a man in half (and often, it did). Samurai code of conduct called bushido was a very grim belief system, which put all the emphasis on personal honor. In it, the katana isn't just a weapon. It represents the embodiment of the samurai steadiness in his beliefs, and is a bond between him and his bushido code.

Eastern Weapons - Bo Staff
The basis of bō technique is te, or hand, techniques derived from quanfa and other martial arts that reached Okinawa via trade and Chinese monks. Thrusting, swinging, and striking techniques often resemble empty-hand movements, following the philosophy that the bō is merely an "extension of one’s limbs". Consequently, bōjutsu is often incorporated into other styles of empty hand fighting, such as karate. The "bō" is also used as a spear and long sword in some of its motions, such as upward swing and slashing motion across the body as well as extensions by gripping one end and thus increasing its length as thus making it similar to a spear. The bō is typically gripped in thirds, and when held horizontally in front, the right palm is facing away from the body and the left hand is facing the body, enabling the staff to rotate. The power is generated by the back hand pulling the staff, while the front hand is used for guidance. Bōtechnique includes a wide variety of blocks, strikes, sweeps, and entrapments. The bō may even be used to sweep sand into an attacker’s eyes.

Eastern Weapons - Traditional Spear
One of the earliest & most important weapons developed by early humans. Inexpensive and simple to produce, their simplicity does not allude to their versatility or lethality. Who knows when humans began adding pointy bits to the ends of wood poles. Certainly, as far back as we can remember in the cradle of civilization they have done so. In keeping with the best available technology, people have sharpened the ends of wood poles, tied on stone and obsidian, and when metallurgy began to develop, metal tips of ever-increasing hardness were added to increase the penetrating capabilities of the older methods. The spear was carried into almost every battle of recorded ancient history.

Eastern Weapons - Sai
The sai is typically used in pairs, with one in each hand. The style includes a variety of blocks, parries, strikes, and captures against attackers from all directions and height levels. Use of the point, knuckle and central bar is emphasized, as well as rapid grip changes for multiple strikes and blocks. The utility of the sai as a weapon is reflected in its distinctive shape. There are several different ways of wielding the sai, which give it the versatility to be used both lethally and non-lethally.

HAMA Weapons - Khopesh
Students will explore the use and fighting style of the Egyptian Khopesh, from 3rd millennium BCE – 1300 BCE. The curvature of the blade made it stronger and the thick blade gave it extra cutting power. Another use of the curve was to hook an opponent’s arm or weapon and then jerk it to unbalance or disarm them. The curve was also useful for thrusting around shields. The sharp tip of the blade would easily slide around the shield and into the arm or any body part that was hiding behind the shield. That ability alone is enough to make the Khopesh design one of the most lethal ever used against shielded opponents.

HAMA Weapons - Iklwa
The Iklwa is a relatively short spear with a long, dagger-like blade that was about half the length of the overall spear. The weapon was designed as a primarily thrusting weapon, although it could be used for slashing an enemy. The name "Iklwa" is derived from the sound that the spear makes as it stabs into the body and the sucking sound when it is withdrawn. Made famous in the Zulu Wars of South Africa, and used by the Zulu tribe during the Battle of Isandlwana, the Battle of Rorke's Drift, and the Battle of Ulundi during the Zulu war in 1879 South Africa.

HAMA Weapons - Assegai
(African Spear) The use of various types of the assegai was widespread all over Africa and it was the most common weapon used before the introduction of firearms. The Zulu and other Nguni tribes of South Africa were renowned for their use of the assegai. The traditional spear was used for a softening range attack on enemy formations before closing in for close quarters battle with the iklwa. This tactical combination originated during Shaka's military reforms.

HEMA Weapons - Rapier
Traditional rapier fencing is a school of rapier that has been passed down from master to student within our lineage. It is a mixed doctrine containing elements of the French, Italian and Spanish schools. The rapier used is a Spanish type cup-hilt rapier that is shorter and lighter than those of the earlier periods. The dagger is also of the Spanish shell-guard type with a somewhat long blade. The emphasis is on sophisticated combinations of blade actions along with both circular and linear footwork. Instruction in Traditional rapier includes single rapier, rapier & dagger, and rapier & cloak.

HEMA Weapons - Small Sword
Firmly rooted in 17th century Spanish rapier fencing (La Verdadera Destreza), this system of small-sword includes features of the French and Italian schools. All of this is systematized into a doctrine that is predominantly Spanish applied to what is in essence a smaller, shorter and lighter rapier. One unique aspect of this system is that unlike French small-sword it includes all of the cutting technique of the earlier 17th century rapier. The system of Spanish small-sword (espadin) taught is based on the mixed doctrine of Don Manuel Antonio De Brea (1805).

HEMA Weapons - Longsword
Salute your opponent, take your guard, and begin the duel. Focusing on the knightly martial art of the German Longsword, Liechtenauer’s Kunst des Fechtens (Liechtenauer’s Art of Fighting) was developed by Johannes Liechtenauer, a 14th century fencing master. Emphasis is placed on drills (solo and paired), as well as test cutting with real (sharp) sword and sparring with blunt steel blades. Students will be introduced to the basics of Lichtenauer’s Kunst des Fechten and HEMA. Using realistic nylon swords, students will practice the 5 master cuts, as well as the basic principals of footwork and winding. Emphasis is placed on proper body mechanics, and cutting alignment

HEMA Weapons - Spear
This versatile weapon was favored by the Vikings and has been found in virtually every culture on Earth. It is a weapon that most Medieval people would have been familiar with, as they would have used it for hunting and self defense.The use of spear throughout Medieval Europe was primarily in military engagements. As a weapon of war, it was ideal because little training is required to use it effectively in formations. In its longer form, the pike, it allowed infantry to oppose cavalry and when shorter and lighter (called a javelin), it could be thrown to soften an enemy line before engaging in melee combat. In single combat, the spear remains a formidable weapon. With lightning fast thrusts and greater range than most swords, it is very difficult to close on a spear man. It also allows (When space is available) the delivery of crushing blows. Even at close range, the shaft can be used to block and deflect like a staff (with which it has much in common) and thrusts with both ends of the weapon.
